Internet Is Infected PART1 "Conficker"

March 28

Is your computer ready for April Fools ?

Malware Threat: Conficker Payload due April 1 2009

Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm that surfaced in October 2008 and targets the Microsoft Windows operating system.[1] The worm exploits a known vulnerability in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and the Windows 7 Beta.[2][3][4] The latest variant will begin checking for a payload to download on April 1, 2009.[5]

Prevention:

  1. Ensure you have an active Anti-virus program installed and keep it updated. Do a full system scan with your anti-virus to make sure that Conficker.C is not already on your machine...lying dormant and quietly waiting for April 1st.
  2. Check to make sure you have applied Microsoft update (patch), KB958644, which was released last October. A computer that is patched will not become infected with Conficker after the patch is applied. You can check by clicking Tools > Windows updates > View update history. Anyone having Windows update set to "automatic" should be all set.
  3. Disable Auto Run: Removable USB/thumb drives use the Autorun feature to load files when the drives are plugged into the USB port. Malware exploits the Autorun feature to spread from thumb drive to PC. Disable the autorun feature to prevent malware from spreading.
